Tyre Replacement or Tyre Repair?
Whether a puncture can be repaired depends on strict safety guidelines set by British Standard BSAU159. The key conditions are as follows:
If your tyre does not meet these conditions, our team will recommend a replacement and fit a suitable new tyre there and then.
Puncture location
Repairs can usually only be carried out if the puncture is within the central three-quarters of the tread. Sidewall damage cannot be repaired as it may compromise the structure of the tyre.
Puncture size
Six millimetres is the maximum size for a safe repair. Small holes caused by screws or nails can often be patched, while larger cuts or gashes usually require replacement.
Number of punctures
Only one puncture can be repaired per quadrant of the tyre. Multiple punctures in the same section could weaken the structure.
Maximum repairs
A single tyre can only be repaired up to three times. After that, it must be replaced.
Overall tyre condition
Repairs can only be carried out if the tyre is otherwise roadworthy. This means a tread depth above 1.6 mm and no visible bulges, cracks, or exposed cords.
